Makeshift Hospital
Penjara Pokok Sena, Kedah
MOH in collaboration with the Malaysian Armed Forces created a makeshift hospital within
the Pokok Sena Prison Complex in Kedah. The purpose of this makeshift hospital was to treat
COVID-19 Category 1 to 4 detainees in Kedah. It is the first of its kind because the centre was
equipped with the necessary equipment and facility to provide care for Category 4 patients. This
include a special observation bay which was equipped with patient monitoring devices, oxygen
support and other necessary emergency equipments. Preparation work for the makeshift hospital
at Pokok Sena prison complex started on 16 October 2020. Besides MOH, other agencies such as
Kedah State Health Department, Prison Department, Kedah Public Works Department, Edgenta
Mediserve Sdn Bhd, Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB), Telekom Malaysia (TM) and SADA (Syarikat
Air Darul Aman) were also involved.
The existing building in the prison area was converted into a temporary health facility to treat
COVID-19 detainees. Among the facilities provided were the operations room, staff rest room,
donning & doffing facilities, treatment/resuscitation room, staging tent, radiology (mobile x-ray),
laboratory (POCT), decontamination tent for clinical waste. This facility can accommodate up to
201 patients and started operation on 25 October 2020.
